Requirements for this SketchUp to CAD Modeling Project
The client had an input SketchUp model of the interior of the entire build area. They wanted IndiaCADworks (ICW) to develop a 3D CAD model of the interior design as provided in the SketchUp model. The client also had the 2D drawings which they wanted our team to convert into SketchUp and finally deliver the all the deliverables in .DWG files.
We received the 2D drawings, which included floor plans and conceptual drawings, and our teams were required to develop the floor plans and elevations with all the necessary construction details. Within 48 hours, our architectural team needed to complete 2 - 3 such modeling assignments with a one-floor plan in each project.
Challenges Faced by ICW’s Architectural Team
The main challenge that we faced revolved around understanding the handwritten drawings, using them as the basis for visualizing the concepts. Additionally, we found it difficult to read and recognize the lines and dimensions in the old blueprints, which at times were a little unclear. Fixing elevations presented another challenge for our team which, in the end, was not insurmountable.
Process We Followed
Using Sketchup 2018 and AutoCAD 2015, our team of two dedicated resources followed a well-planned, step-wise approach:
- Our team received 2D drawings in the form of floor plans and conceptual drawings.
- We took the time to develop a thorough understanding of the project requirements.
- Once we had a closer look at the provided files, our team fixed the elevation, took a snapshot, scaled the image, and developed a draft.
- Next, we created a black and white 3D CAD model.
- The final outputs were delivered in both CAD and PDF formats.
